Abstract

Heat dissipation casings in personal electronics using graphene-functionalized wood fiber composite

Manufacturers of personal electronics are now attempting to create heat conductive components with a lower carbon footprint and a minimal use of metal oxides. Graphene functionalized wood fiber composites is one possible solution. Graphene is a highly thermally conductive material that can be used as a thermal conductivity filler in wood fiber composites.

Starting at Technology Readiness Level 1 (TRL1), the project's purpose is to validate the viability of employing amphiphilic graphene functionalized wood/cellulose as a biobased thermal conductive filler in polymers. Together with Biofiber tech and RISE, the project intends to develop a cost-effective and process-efficient strategy for making graphene-based wood fiber composites with higher heat dissipation properties at TRL2.

This initiative helps to reduce the utilization of metal oxide-filled thermal conductive polymer-based components. As a result, the environmental effect is reduced due to less pollution and lower energy consumption to create and recycle electronic components (SDG 12, Target 4). Following project completion, the material's performance will be validated for prospective usage in Swedish personal electronic manufacture.
